The NBA Playoffs 2026 Are Delivering Maximum Drama
The 2026 NBA Playoffs have officially entered their most critical stretch. After two weeks of first-round action, six of the eight opening series remain alive at 3–2, setting the stage for a nail-biting cluster of Game 6s and potential Game 7s. Only the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs have punched their tickets to the second round, sweeping and dominating their respective opponents with authority.
For everyone else, survival is still a question mark.
Eastern Conference: Every Series Still Hanging
The Eastern Conference has been a battleground from the opening tip, and not a single series has been decided without a fight.
(1) Detroit Pistons vs. (8) Orlando Magic — Magic Lead 3–2
The biggest upset story of the first round so far belongs to the Orlando Magic. The eighth-seeded Magic have been making life miserable for the top-seeded Pistons, taking a 3–2 series lead heading into Game 6 on May 1. Detroit won Game 5 at home (116–109) to push back, but the Pistons’ probability of closing out on the road is only 58%, according to win probability models. Magic fans have every reason to believe.
(2) Boston Celtics vs. (7) Philadelphia 76ers — Celtics Lead 3–2
This series has been a rollercoaster. Philadelphia stunned Boston in Game 5 on the road, 113–97, to keep their season alive after getting blown out 128–96 in Game 4. The Sixers now return home for Game 6 (April 30, 8:00 PM ET on Peacock), where they hold a 66.6% chance of seeing a Game 7, but Boston still holds the series edge at 3–2 and has the firepower to close it out.

(3) New York Knicks vs. (6) Atlanta Hawks — Knicks Lead 3–2
New York looks in control. The Knicks obliterated the Hawks in Game 5 (126–97) and lead the series 3–2. Game 6 tips off April 30 at 7:00 PM ET on ESPN. Win probability gives the Knicks a 56.2% edge to close it at home tonight. Atlanta needs a miracle performance to force a seventh game.
(4) Cleveland Cavaliers vs. (5) Toronto Raptors — Cavaliers Lead 3–2
Perhaps the most evenly contested series in the East. Toronto stole Game 4 on the road (93–89), but Cleveland hit back hard in Game 5 (125–120) at home. The series heads back to Toronto for Game 6 on May 1, where the Raptors have a 40.1% chance of forcing a decider. The Cavaliers, at 59.9%, are favored but far from comfortable.

(1) Oklahoma City Thunder vs. (8) Phoenix Suns — Thunder Win 4–0
The Thunder were utterly dominant. OKC swept Phoenix in four games, never allowing the Suns to steal a single contest. This is a Thunder team operating at championship-level efficiency, and they now await the winner of the Lakers–Rockets series in the second round.
(2) San Antonio Spurs vs. (7) Portland Trail Blazers — Spurs Win 4–1
San Antonio was nearly as dominant. The Spurs dropped just one game to Portland before closing out the series in Game 5 (114–95). The Spurs advance to the Western Conference Semifinals, where they’ll face the winner of Timberwolves vs. Nuggets.
(3) Denver Nuggets vs. (6) Minnesota Timberwolves — Timberwolves Lead 3–2
The Timberwolves are making an extraordinary push. The sixth seed leads the third-seeded Nuggets 3–2 after Minnesota won Games 3 and 4 before Denver rallied in Game 5 (125–113). Game 6 tips off April 30 at 9:30 PM ET on ESPN, with Denver favored at 66.7% to force a Game 7 at home. But Minnesota has already proved it can win away from home.
(4) Los Angeles Lakers vs. (5) Houston Rockets — Lakers Lead 3–2 (Now Rockets Lead After Game 5)
This series took a dramatic turn. Houston won Game 5 (99–93) on the Lakers’ home floor to tie things up — wait, to put the Rockets ahead, flipping the series lead back to Houston at 3–2 per updated data. Game 6 tips May 1 at 9:30 PM ET on Prime Video, with Houston now favored at 61% to close it out. The Lakers’ season is suddenly in serious danger.

How to Watch: A New Broadcast Era
The 2026 NBA Playoffs are also notable for what’s happening off the court: the league has entered a new broadcast era. For the first time, NBA playoff games are split across three major media partners — ESPN/ABC, NBC/Peacock, and Prime Video — alongside the traditional ESPN App and DIRECTV Stream options.
| Platform | Coverage |
|---|---|
| ABC / ESPN | Primary broadcast partner, NBA Finals exclusively on ABC |
| NBC / Peacock | Selected games including Celtics–Sixers Game 6 |
| Prime Video | Play-In Tournament + selected playoff games |
| ESPN App / DIRECTV Stream | Live streaming of ESPN-broadcast games |

Prime Video streaming the full Play-In Tournament was a landmark moment for the league’s digital strategy, and that partnership continues into the first round.
Play-In Tournament Recap
Before the first round tipped off, the Play-In Tournament delivered its own share of drama. The most memorable result was the Charlotte Hornets defeating the Miami Heat 127–126 in overtime. The Sixers, Blazers, Magic, and Suns each secured their playoff spots through the Play-In after narrow victories and eliminations.
| Game | Result |
|---|---|
| Hornets vs. Heat | Hornets win 127–126 (OT) |
| Trail Blazers vs. Suns | Trail Blazers win 114–110 |
| Sixers vs. Magic | Sixers win 109–97 |
| Warriors vs. Clippers | Warriors win 126–121 |
| Magic vs. Hornets | Magic win 121–90 |
| Suns vs. Warriors | Suns win 111–96 |
Looking Ahead: Conference Semifinals on the Horizon
With two teams already through, the Conference Semifinals are scheduled to begin May 4–5. OKC and San Antonio are rested, ready, and scouting their future opponents. The rest of the playoff field — six series still unresolved — must survive this week first.
The NBA Finals remain penciled in for June 3–19, exclusively on ABC. Which teams will be standing when the confetti falls is anyone’s guess right now — and that’s exactly what makes the 2026 postseason must-watch basketball.
